Why You Don’t Need a Hat When a Bat Flies In your house?
Did you know that you don’t need to wear a hat indoors if a bat accidentally flies into your home? Or that it’s practically impossible to wake up with two vampire-like bite marks on your neck just because a tiny bat fluttered out your window during the night? And if something like that does happen… it almost certainly has nothing to do with the bat.
These are the kinds of myths that have followed bats for centuries — mysterious, dramatic, and often completely untrue. Yet despite their reputation, bats are among the most harmless and helpful animals we share our environment with.
Breaking the Myths
Bats don’t get tangled in your hair. They don’t attack people. And in Europe, they don’t drink blood. Most species you might encounter feed on insects, playing a crucial role in keeping ecosystems balanced. In fact, a single bat can eat hundreds or even thousands of insects in one night.
So when a bat accidentally flies into a room, it’s not there to bother you. It’s simply disoriented, trying to find its way back outside. A calm approach — opening a window and letting it leave — is all that’s needed.
Learning Through Play
But how do we help the next generation understand this?
In our project, we’ve found that one of the best ways is through play. Children who join our activities have the chance to explore these questions and discover the truth by playing the CHIROP TERRA board game.
This isn’t just a game — it’s an interactive learning experience. As they play, children encounter real-life situations, fun challenges, and surprising facts about bats. They learn to distinguish myths from reality, understand the ecological importance of bats, and build a sense of respect for nature.
From Fear to Curiosity
What starts as curiosity often turns into fascination. The idea of bats shifts from something scary to something worth protecting. Children begin to see bats not as creatures of the night to fear, but as essential allies in maintaining the balance of our environment.
And perhaps the most rewarding part? They take this knowledge with them — sharing it with friends, family, and their communities.
CHIROP TERRA
is a fun and educational board game that introduces players to the fascinating world of bats and their essential role in maintaining the balance of nature.
The goal of the game is for players to move along a path consisting of 60 steps and be the first to reach FINISH, while discovering surprising and interesting facts about these often misunderstood nocturnal animals along the way.
The world of bats is not one of fear, but of mystery and natural balance. Many myths and superstitions have formed around them: that they get caught in human hair, that they attack people, or that they are dangerous without reason. Because of these misconceptions, bats are often rejected, and their natural habitats are increasingly disappearing.
In reality, bats are important allies of nature. A small bat can consume up to three times its body weight in insects, including mosquitoes, thereby helping to maintain ecosystem balance and reduce pests.
However, bats are extremely sensitive. During winter they hibernate, and if disturbed — for example by noise, entering caves, or disturbing their colonies — they quickly use up their energy reserves, which can even lead to their death. At the same time, the cutting down of old hollow trees removes their natural habitats, leaving them without safe shelter.
With this game we aim to bring a smile to your face, while you discover the hidden yet vital world of bats through play. Protect them, because the night comes alive thanks to their silent wings!
