Bechstein’s bat (Myotis bechsteinii) is one of Europe’s rarest and most elusive bat species. What is Bechstein’s Bat?

Habitat Requirements
The key to understanding Myotis bechsteinii is knowing its dependency on old-growth forests. These bats rarely venture far from continuous woodland habitats. They roost almost exclusively in:

Bechstein’s bat is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List and is strictly protected under the EU Habitats Directive (Annex II and IV). The primary threats include:
- Loss of old-growth forests and habitat fragmentation.
- Intensive forestry practices that remove veteran trees.
- Decline of natural roosting sites (tree cavities).
